Balinese artists invited to Beijing Biennale

Six Balinese artists have been invited to participate in the upcoming 3rd Beijing International Art Biennale after their works of art passed the rigid selection process of the event's curatorial board.

The biennale will be held as a parallel event to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

"We are really proud to have played a small role in making this happen ... in assisting these artists to be able to participate in this prestigious event," Ign. Darmawan of the Rumah Budaya Bali Mangsi said.

A private cultural institution, Rumah Budaya Bali Mangsi, organized the administrative matters relating to the artists' participation in the Biennale.

Two of Rumah Budaya Bali Mangsi's staff members, Darmawan and Benito Lopulalan, played a pivotal role in convincing the Biennale's organizing committee to give the Balinese artists additional time to submit their pieces after the official registration period had already ended.

The participating artists are Wayan Sujana Suklu, Polenk Rediasa, Ida Bagus Indra, Grace Tjondronimpuno, Putu Edy Asmara Putra and Agus Cahaya. All are young, promising artists known for their aesthetic explorations with new themes and mediums.

"The Biennale's curatorial board selected three of Agus Cahaya's pieces, two works of Ida Bagus Indra, and one each of Polenk Rediasa, Suklu, Edy Asmara Putra and Grace Tjondronimpuno," Darmawan said.

The artists all had similar responses to the invitation.

"We are honored to accept the invitation and we believe it will be a good opportunity to bring our works and aesthetic explorations to the global stage," Suklu said.

In the biennale's academic symposium, Rumah Budaya Bali Mangsi will also present a paper on Exploring Stupidity (a project exploring the possibilities of misunderstandings).

The biennale will be held until end of August 2008 and will involve artists from 70 countries. The Beijing Olympic Games will take place Aug. 8-24.

Sponsored by the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the People's Government of Beijing Municipality and the Chinese Artists Association, the biennale is to use the theme "Color and Olympism".

The Biennale's press materials detail the theme as a vivid depiction of the close relationship between the biennale and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. A variety of colors used implies the diversity of human cultures.

The 3rd Beijing International Art Biennale aims to enrich the humanistic spirit promoted by the Beijing Olympics through paintings and sculpture.

The first Beijing International Art Biennale in 2003 drew an average of 20,000 visitors per day.
